They were integral. He knew there would be no ministry success if the Native Americans were not able to be educated and read and study the Scriptures. He cared for them pastorally, and took his role as their shepherd seriously. To him, they were not prey to be exploited, but the congregation he was tasked with pastoring and protecting.
